의대 교육을 모델로 한 미국의 5년제 교사교육 사례 연구 = A Case Study of the Medical Model Oriented 5 Year Teacher Education Program of an American University

국문 초록 (Abstract)

  웨스트버지니아 대학교의 교사교육은 학사과정과 석사과정을 통합하여, 5년 과정으로 운영되고 있다. 이 프로그램에서는 총 1,000시간이 넘는 현장 실습을 6학기로 나누어서 실시하며, 5학년은 의대와 같이 인턴 교사 과정으로 운영하고 있다. 인턴 과정에서는 실습학교에서 한 학기 동안 풀타임 인턴교사 근무와 다음 학기의 135 시간 계약 근무를 하면서, 수업의 개선을 위한 실행연구를 실시하여 연구보고서를 제출한다. 전체 교육과정 운영은 대학과 28개 협력학교 간의 체계적 협력에 의해서 이루어진다. 이 프로그램에 대한 문화기술적 사례연구 실시 결과 추출한 우리나라 교사교육의 개선을 위한 시사점은 다음과 같다: 1) 우리나라의 교육 실습 시간을 현재의 몇 배로 늘리되, 모든 실습은 인증된 협력학교에서 실시하도록 할 필요가 있다. 이 때, 대학교수와 협력교사 사이에 동등하고 지속적인 협조관계가 유지되도록 실습과정을 운영해야 성공할 수 있다. 2) 공식적 실습시간 확대에 한계가 있다면, 저학년들은 각자 찾은 학교에서의 자원봉사나 튜터 활동을 하도록 하되, 체계적인 운영이 되도록 대학에서 이들을 위한 코스를 운영하는 한편, 각 학교에 이들을 지도하도록 훈련받은 교사를 배치할 필요가 있다. 3) 웨스트버지니아 대학교의 5년제 실행연구 중심 교사교육 모델을 문화적, 사회적 배경이 다른 우리나라에서도 부분적인 수정만으로 적용할 수 있는지 검토할 필요가 있다. 검토결과 적용이 가능하다면, 우리나라의 현실에 맞는 프로그램을 개발하여, 몇 대학에서 실험을 해볼 필요가 있다. 예를 들어 교대와 사대, 또는 일반 대학의 교직과정과 교육대학원을 연계하여, 5년제의 학사, 석사 통합 과정을 운영하는 것도 생각해볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

  The aim of this study is to get ideas and tips for the reform of Korean teacher Education program through an mini-ethnographic study of an American university"s success case. Funded by Benedum Foundation since the 1980"s, West Virginia University has developed a unique 5 year action research oriented teacher education program which is called "the Benedum Model of Teacher Education at West Virginia University" based on the medical education model. Though this program turned out first graduates in 2000, this program got national recognition already in 2003. West Virginia University"s Benedum Collaborative along with a program at the University of Texas Austin, has been recognized as an exemplary teacher preparation program in an a report Meeting the Highly Qualified Teachers Challenge: The Secretary"s Second Annual Report on Teacher Quality by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige.<BR>  Based on participant observation and interviews as well as document analysis conducted during six weeks in spring of 2005, this study describes history, curriculum, management and participants" view of the Benedum Model of Teacher Education at West Virginia University. Based on this description, this study analyzes how and why the reform has been achieved successfully. This study also suggests ideas and tips which might be useful for the successful reform of Korean teacher education programs.
