본 연구는 질적, 양적 연구 방법이 미술교육의 관심사들을 이해하고 해결하는데 서로 상보적이거나 시너지 효과를 가질 수 있는지에 대하여 검토해 보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 다른 방법으로 동일한 현상을 연구하여 얻은 결과의 수렴과 확증을 위한 다면적 검증, 둘째, 한 연구 방법으로 얻어진 결과를 다른 연구 방법으로 얻어진 결과로서 검증, 확장, 예증, 설명하는 상호보완성, 셋째, 한 방법을 통해 도출된 결과가 다른 방법의 실행을 안내하는 발전, 넷째가 연구 문제를 재구성하도록 유도하는 패러독스나 모순을 발견하는 안내, 다섯째, 다른 탐구 요소들을 위한 다른 연구 방법을 사용함으로서 탐구의 깊이와 범위를 확대하는 확장 등에서 장점을 가진다는 것이 밝혀졌다.

This paper provides evidence that the debate between qualitative and quantitative methodologies is divisive and counterproductive for advancing the fields of art education. All researchers in art education should learn to use and appreciate both methodologies to develop into ‘bi-researcher’.
Becoming a bi-researcher offers some advantages. First, it enables researchers to be flexible in their investigative techniques. Second, it enables researchers to verify the findings that derives from qualitative approaches by quantitative method, and vise versa. Finally, it enables researcher to utilize mixed methodologies within the same inquiry to get deep and ranged understanding.
A false dichotomy exists between qualitative and quantitative research, with all distinctions between two methods lying on continua. Relying on only one type of data is extremely limiting, and ‘uni- research’ is a threat to the advancement of the social science.
