미국대학의 학생선발방법과 한국입시제도에의 시사점 - Berkeley, Stanford와 Washington 대학을 중심으로 = American universities' ways of selecting the students and the analysis of their implications

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 미국의 Berkeley, Stanford와 Washington 대학의 입학사정관을 면담하고, 각종 서류와 기준들을 취합하여 분석하여, 이들 대학에서 학생들을 어떤 기준을 가지고, 어떻게 선발하고 있는가를 살펴보았다. 이들 대학들은 다소간의 차이는 있었으나, 고등학교의 교과성적과 지적인 능력뿐만 아니라 예.체능 분야의 특기와 활동사항과 봉사활동실적 그리고 앞으로 그 학생이 어느 정도 성장가능성이 있는가를 중요시 하였다. 또한 상대적으로 가난하고 불우한 여건과 환경속에서 도전정신을 가지고 열심히 노력한 학생과 문화적으로 그리고 사회적으로 다양한 배경을 가진 학생들을 선발하기 위해 노력했다. 우리나라의 수능성적과 같은 SAT 점수는 상대적으로 큰 비중을 차지 않았다. 우리나라의 대학도 현재와 같이 지나치게 점수위주의 선발방법과 획일적인 입시제도에서 탈피하여, 고등학교에 다니는 동안 고교 교육과정을 정상적으로 그리고 충실히 이행한 학생들 그리고 장래의 사회지도자로서 자질과 능력을 갖춘 학생들이 일류 대학에 입학할 수 있도록 입시제도를 개선해 나가야 한다. 나아가 모든 학생을 똑같은 기준으로 선발하기 보다는 어렵고 가난한 환경 속에서도 도전정신을 가지고 열심히 노력한 학생들에게도 기회를 주기 위해 노력해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Our government recently announced to change the ways of selecting the students in the universities. The college entrance examination have been changed too frequently and many times since 1945 but almost every person in Korea is not satisfied with the entrance examination system. I and my colleagues working in KEDI visited Berkeley, Stanford and Washington Universities and talk with the admission officers and review the documents. Even though the ways of selecting the students are different and each university has its own way, we can find out some common features. The admissions process honors academic achievement and accords priority to students of exceptional academic achievement. At the same time, The decision-making process employs a broad and multifaced definition of merit, including an assessment of contributions that a student will make to the intellectual, cultural, or other aspects of campus life. Each applicant is judged individually and comprehensively and all achievements are evaluated in the context in which the students learned and lived, as well as the opportunities available to the student and how he or she responded to challenges. Our government should make an efforts to improve the university examination system. The student can be admitted to the universities according to the academic achievement in high schools without special entrance examination.
