경제와 윤리의 충돌에 관한 고찰 : 양자의 합리적 관계설정을 위한 시론 = The Conflicts between Economy and Ethics : A Proposal for the Rational Relationship between the Two

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Today the one-dimensional dominion of economic rationality, one of the most important features of Western modernity, gradually emasculates ethical interventions, disclosing the self-contradictions of modernity which can be summed up by 'moral blindness of private self-interests' and 'systematic suppression of human autonomy'. Nevertheless it tends to be justified explicitly or implicitly by such theoretical models as Hobbesian contractarianism and Niklas Luhmann's system theory.But Hobbesian model of social contract theory is problematic because it obscures the intrinsic significance of ethics, of which the transcendence of individuality is of the essence, by reducing ethics to the schemes to secure private self-interests stably. And Luhmann's system theory is controversial in that it emasculates the normative concerns to remedy contradictions and pathologies of our life caused by the functional rationality of economic system by emphasizing the closed self-reference of the functionally differentiated sub-systems of society. By analyzing those controversial points, this paper attempts to bring the comprehensive meaning of ethics - which can neither be reduced to the market ethics based on self-interest, nor adjust itself to the irresistible force of selfreferential sub-systems - into relief.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서구적 근대의 가장 중요한 특징들 중 하나인 경제적 합리성의 일차원적 지배질서는 오늘날 ‘자기이익의 도덕적인 맹목’과 ‘인간의 자율성에 대한 체계적인 억압’으로 요약될 수 있는 근대성의 자기모순들을 노정하면서 윤리적인 개입들을 점점 더 무력화하고 있다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 경제적 합리성의 일차원적 지배질서는 홉스적인 사회계약론(Hobbesian contractarianism)과 니클라스 루만(Niklas Luhmann)의 체계이론 같은 이론 모델들에 의해서 명시적으로 또는 암묵적으로 정당화되는 경향이 있다. 그러나 홉스적 사회계약론은 자기이익을 안정적으로 확보하기 위한 시장윤리적 방책으로 윤리를 환원함으로써 개체성의 초월을 요체로 하는 윤리의 의의를 희석시킨다는 문제점이 있으며, 루만의 체계이론은 기능적으로 분화된 사회체계들의 자기준거적 폐쇄성을 강조함으로써 경제체계의 기능적 합리성이 초래한 삶의 모순과 병리를 치유하고자 하는 규범적 관심 자체를 무력화한다는 문제점이 있다. 필자는 그와 같은 문제점들을 분석함으로써 자기이익에 기초한 시장윤리로 환원되지도 않고 체계의 불가항력에 순응하지도 않는 윤리의 포괄적인 의의를 부각시켜 보고자 한다.
