유아교육과 학생들의 전공 선택 동기와 유아교사직에 대한 인식 = Student Teachers` Perceptions of Teaching Young Children as a Career in Early Childhood Education

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examined student teachers` perspectives of their career choices and t eaching profession in the field of early childhood education. The data were collected from 1,238 students of all grades majoring in early child hood education at 7 colleges and 8 universities of Korea. The questionnaire was designed to find out the motives of their choices, their pe rceptions of the important qualities which teachers of young children had to be sati sfied and teaching profession in the field of early childhood education, and their ex pectations for their future as a teacher. The results were as follows: Most of the students articulated that their main motive for choosing their majors was `the love and concern for young children` and t hey themselves choose their majors. They also expected that caring quality was t he most critical for teachers of young children. Many students had experiences of taking care of young children before entering the college. They recognized the teaching profession of young children as a stressful and low-paid job with low social status. But they thought that the profession was highly contributable and very altruistic and needed competency in communication skill. They anticipated that teaching young children would brought job satisfaction, however their career perspectives w ere gloomy. Almost 50% of students expected they would not keep the job of teaching any longer than 5 years after their graduation, mainly because of low salary and hard work.
