벤처기업 실패요인에 관한 실증연구 = Failure Factors of High-tech Ventures : an Empirical Study

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 벤처기업 실패요인이 무엇인지를 조사하려 하였다. 실패기업을 조사하기 위해 벤처기업협회(KOVA)에 등록되어 있는 기업들을 대상으로 1997년에 설문조사를 실시한 바 있는 기업들을 추적하였다. 실패기업과 생존기업간에 차이를 분석한 결과 창업자 특성(창업자의 연령, 기업경영경험, 전공관련성, 학력, 위험감수성향, 자원과 능력(자기자금비중), 경쟁전략(시장세분화, 마케팅 차별화전략), 기업연령에서 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 변수들간의 관계를 고려하여 벤처기업 실패를 보다 명확히 판별해주는 변인을 식별하기 위해 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 창업시 자기자금비중, 시장세분화, 마케팅차별화 전략이 실패기업과 생존기업을 판별해주는 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 추가적으로 생존한 기업들 중에서 고성과 벤처기업이 일반 벤처기업과 차이가 있는 특성은 무엇인지를 조사하였다. 그 결과 고성과 벤처기업들의 성공요인과 실패기업의 실패요인은 일치되는 특성이 발견되지 않았다. 즉, 성공요인의 반대는 실패요인이 아니며 벤처기업의 실패에 영향을 미치는 요인과 성공에 영향을 미치는 요인은 구별되어야 함을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of failed high-tech ventures. And we test empirically which perspective is superior to explain business failure. For the research we surveyed 113 firms registered on Korea Venture Business Association in 1997 and traced them in 2000. Empirical findings are summarized as follows; Failed entrepreneurs are older and have more experiences of business management than the survived ones. They have launched a business in areas unrelated to their major field. They are at relatively lower level in their education and risk taking propensity. Failed start-ups are younger and have less capital stock than the survivors. They pursue marketing differentiation strategies in more broad market areas. From the logistic regression analysis, capital stock, market segmentation, and marketing differentiation strategy were the most important discriminants of the venture business failure. And these failure factors were different from the success factors.
