In this study, I examined the concepts of the terms related to emotional intelligence which becomes the foundation of personality education and the changing process of the meaning of the terms. And I also searched the past and present situations as to the practice of personality education. Early in the past, in the process of educational activities in traditional Korean society, more emphasis was put on personality education than knowledge transmission , and personality education was emphasized by all the families. On the basis of such reality, in this study I examined, through classics such as Myongsimbogam, Kyokmongyokyol, Sajasohak and Sohakearnhae, the contents of personality education for the infant in traditional Korean society, and will present the developing plans of emotional intelligence and the direction of personality development education in the future. The argument about the direction of personality education in Korean infant and child education in the 21st century, which was derived from the study of such process by the researcher, is that we should establish a new paradigm of personality development education, that is, ‘fusion personality education’, combining traditional elements with modern ones selectively to improve emotional intelligence.
