The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two kinds of puppet play activities(based on performance and based on play) on the prosocial behaviors of young children. The subjects of this study were eighty young children who were selected from one daycare center in Seoul. The age of the subjects ranged from 4- to 6-year-olds. Those children were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and a control guoup. The first group(n=20) received the puppet play activity based on performance, the second group(n=20) received the puppet play activity based on play and the third group(n=20) were set up as a contol. The puppet play activities(based on performance and based on play) were given 5 sessions. However, the subjects in the control group didn’t receive any activity. After all the sessions, all the children were individually tested twice on the instruments that were used in Gyehyangsuk’s(1985) research to measure young children’s sharing behavior and behavior in helping others. To analyze the collected data, Oneway Analysis of Variance and Scheffe’ verification were used. The results are as followings ; First, both kinds of puppet play activity are effective n improving young children’s prosocial behaviors. Second, among the two kinds of puppet play activity, the activity based on play is more effective than the activity based on performance in improving young children’s prosocial behaviors. Third, the young children who participated in the puppet play activity maintained the improved prosocial behaviors for fifteen weeks.
