In this research, an emotion regulation competence program for children was developed and its effectiveness was evaluated. The developed program consists of 30 activities, which evenly cover five different areas of emotion regulation : understanding emotions in self, understanding emotions of others, understanding multiple emotion , changing emotion and hiding emotion. The effectiveness of the developed program was examined in a kindergarten. Participants were 63 kindergarteners randomly divided into two groups: experimental group(31) and controlled group(32). In the experimental group, the activities of the developed program were carried out every other day for 10 consecutive weeks. In the controlled group, the regular activities of the 6th Kindergarten Curriculum was carried out. The emotion regulation competence of the participating children were measured before and after the experiment. The analysis of the results show that the program affects the children’s emotion regulation competence significantly and that the effect of the program varies with the children’s cognitive competence level. The main effects of the program and cognitive competence level occurred especially in the areas of understanding emotion in self, understanding emotion of others, and changing emotion . Especially, the program and cognitive competence level shows a strong interaction effect on understanding emotion of others, indicating that the effectiveness of the program is more evident in the children with high cognitive competence level.
