초기 북한에서 사회주의적 과학기술자의 창출 = The Making of Socialist Scientists and Engineers in North Korea

This paper aims to analyze how North Korea bred red experts in science and technology during the period between 1945 and 1950. The North Korean government began to form science and engineering communities from 1946 but there were very few scientists and engineers whose loyalty the regime trusted. When the purge of faculty members at Kim Il Sung University started with the special emphasis on the class origins and partisan affiliations in 1947, half of the faculty members were expelled from the schools of engineering and medicine. The regime however could not find any good and sufficient number of substitutes to fill the vacant posts. Then, experts in factory floors and hospitals became a new source of manpower to fill academic posts. Pyongyang College of Technology and Pyongyang College of Medicine, both of which were separated from Kim Il Sung University in 1948, became crowded with such “practical” experts. As a result, North Korean science and engineering communities included field-oriented specialists along with ideology-oriented ones.
