The purpose of my paper is to argue that our emotions play a fundamental role in our moral lives, and that they are at least as valuable here as the actions we perform. In order to gain a proper appreciation of moral significance of emotions, I first tried to analyse an adequate account of the nature of emotion, that is, what an emotion is. After I discussed a few theories of emotions, I considered emotion as complex phenomena involving dynamically related elements of cognition, desire, and affectivity. I am sure that only a conception of emotion in terms of these three elements can do justice to the central role of emotions in morality.
I argued a detailed account of the moral significance of emotions by looking at some characteristics of an emotionally flawed person, and I demonstrate how such a person may thereby have certain moral defects. And concerning about whether emotions can be morally good motives to action, I discussed comparatively between the view of Kant(against emotions as moral motives) and that of M. Scheler and J. Oakely(for emotions as moral motives).
Given emotions can play an important role in our good lives, how should be the aim, content, and method of emotion education in moral education? My answer to this question is as follows; firstly, we need the understanding of the significance of moral emotion in human's moral life, secondly, we can be responsible for our emotions not only by gaining various kinds of control over our emotional episodes, but also in the deeper sense that we can develop our emotional capabilities in ways which lead to our having an enduring and appropriate type of sensitivity as a feature of character.
