The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between temperament and play behavior of pre-schoolers. The subjects of this study were 365 three, four, and five years old children from 4 early childhood education centers in Seoul and Kyungi-do. The results of this study were: (1) Boys showed higher activity and low persistence than girls. Five-year-olds were more stable in emotionality, less active, and more soothable than youngers. (2) Girls participated more in solitary-active behavior and more in social play with peers, whereas boys engaged more in rough play than girls. Five-year-olds engaged less in reticent and solitary behavior and more in social play than younger children. (3) Children`s play behavior was highly related and explained by temperament. Children who were sociable. active, persistent. and soothable engaged more iii social play. Children who were active but not so persistent and soothable preferred rough play. Reticent behavior was exlained by low sociability and low soothability. Solitary-active behavior was predicted by low soothability, high persistence and high activity And solitary-passive behavior was explained by high persistence and low sociability and emotionality.
