This study aims to find out aesthetic points of Jinju Gummu, a traditional Korean sword dance, in terms of beauty of phenomenal dancing arts. Jinju Gummu embodies thoughts, emotions, and beauty in a united universe of time and space through body movements. The fundamental principle of the movements in the dance tries not only to express the instinctive energy of human body, but also to make an embodiment of the integral part of human mind. In other words, Jinju Gummu can be seen as a harmonious form of somatological rhythm of human body and the inner world of human mind. It is hoped that the Gummu is incorporated as a part of regular school curriculum so that our students can learn to appreciate its aesthetic value. The dance can then become part of popular culture.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

국문초록본 연구는 현상학적 무용 예술의 미학적 관점을 통해서 한국의 전통검무인 진주검무에 내재한 미학적 요소를 구명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 현상학적 관점에서 신체 움직임의 조형성과 움직임의 형태와 몸짓 그리고 역동적 선과 리듬에 관해 살펴볼 때 우리의 몸 자체가 실존을 표현하는 방식이다. 또한 여성스러움과 우아함, 섬세함의 미를 표현하고 있으며 당시의 시대적 상황을 내면적으로 함유하는 이중적 의미 요소를 가진다. 진주검무는 신체의 움직임을 통해 사상과 감정 그리고 미를 전체적인 공간성과 시간성으로 형상화하였으며 각 춤사위와 리듬의 변화는 향토적 특색을 담고 있다. 이와 같이 진주검무는 움직임의 원리가 인간 생명의 원초적인 힘을 바탕으로 정신적인 의미를 추구하는 춤으로서 육체 본래의 생명력을 함유한 생체리듬과 인간 내면세계의 조화로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 생명력을 함유한 신체의 생체리듬과 인간내면의 정신세계의 조화를 예술미로 승화시켜 표현하는데 있어서 현상학적 측면의 전(前)반성적 의미로 해석되어 질 수 있을 것이다. 이처럼 진주검무를 서양철학적 관점인 현상학적 시각으로 분석함으로써 전통무용에 대한 또 다른 의미부여가 될 것으로 기대하며 새로운 무용인식의 가능성을 타진할 수 있을 것이다. 오늘날 서양문화에 익숙해진 우리의 학생들로 하여금 우리의 것으로 모두가 춤출 수 있고 배울 수 있는 교육의 현장으로 흡수되어 교육적 가치를 가지게 될 때 진주검무는 대중문화의 장 속에서 함께 어우러질 것으로 기대하는 바이다.
