This study aims to investigate what kinds of request strategies are used in specific request situations and what determines the degree of politeness. The study examines the data completion test and the assessment test used in the previous studies, and checks if they can apply to all possible request situations. It also examines if there are any other social variables affecting request strategies. The main findings are: (1) request strategies need to be reclassified as the movie transcripts include a lot of data which are difficult to classify. (2) the distribution of the request strategies are affected by familiarity, request situation, power, risk and affect in order. The sex and age of the speaker and the addressee do not show significant differences in the request strategies in the data. (3) The frequent request strategies are mood derivable (42.9 %), suggestory formulae(l2.9%) and want statements(11.3%). However, past modals were not used frequently except between strangers, although it is the typical request form learned by foreign learners. (4) power and familiarity affect the degree of politeness. The speaker tends to actively use + politeness or - politeness in the request rather than 0 politeness. When the addressee has power and is not familiar with the speaker, the speaker uses a more polite request. As the speaker tries to avoid the face threatening act when the addressee is no familiar with the speaker, the request data for such cases were few.
