The purpose of this study is to classify drinking patterns based on a quantity-frequency index. The quantity-frequency typology illuminates two basic features of drinking patterns: the frequency of drinking alcoholic beverages and the frequency of drinking five or more drinks per occasion. The importance of this approach to measuring alcohol consumption was suggested by Knupfer. A total of 145 respondents participated in this study. The predominant patterns of drinking were less frequent and high maximum and frequent heavy drinking. 47.2% of respondents are frequent heavy drinkers and about 28% of them are less frequent and high maximum drinkers. This means that respondents usually drink a large amount of alcoholic beverages in a sitting. Further studies with more representative samples should be conducted to confirm the results of this study as well as to identify psychosocial characteristics of each drinking pattern which may be useful for social workers working in a field of alcohol.
