In this study of the effects of children's communications with mothers and self-esteem on school adjustment, 538 5th and 6th graders replied to a series of questionaires. The several major results were found.
1) By 6th graders, girls showed higher levels of school adjustment than boys. But by 5th graders, no gender difference was found. And by boys, 5th graders showed higher levels of school adjustment than 6th graders. But by girls no grade difference was found.
2) Open communications with mothers had a direct and an indirect effect by way of self-esteem on school adjustment and was the first contribution factor.
3) Children's self-esteem had a direct effect on school adjustment. Gender had a direct and an indirect effect by way of open and problematic communications with mothers on school adjustment. Grade had a direct effect on school adjustment. Problematic communications with mothers had an indirect effect by way of children's self-esteem on school adjustment.
