인터넷 사회자본 연구의 동향과 과제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정보사회는 복합적이고 다중적인 형태로 진화하고 있기 때문에 일 방향적인 상승 발전만으로 표현될 수 없다. 이에 사회과학자들은 정보사회로 형성된 인터넷 현상과 효과를 해석하고 미래를 전망하려는 시도를 계속하고 있다. 본 연구는‘사회자본 접근법(social capital approach)’을 바탕으로 인터넷이 사회자본에 어떤 영향을 미치는지, 그 관계를 강화론과 쇠퇴론, 보완론으로 구분하여 연구 성과를 이론적으로 고찰한 비평논문이다.
사회자본 형성의 인터넷 효과에 대한 연구는 많은 논의가 있었음에도 불구하고 도식적인 구분에 막혀 활용과 미래상에 대한 접근은 상대적으로 적었다. 따라서 기존 학자들의 성과를 바탕으로, 인터넷을 활용해 시민적 신뢰와 수평적인 네트워크의 사회자본을 강화하기 위한 연구의 필요성은 증대되고 있다.
이를 극복하기 위해서 논문에서는 4가지를 제시한다. 첫째, 인터넷 사회자본의 강화와 쇠퇴, 보완을 넘어서 진화하는 현상에 대한 실증적인 연구의 활성화가 필요하다. 둘째, 인터넷 가상성과 현실, 또는 온라인과 오프라인의 상호작용 형태의 사회자본 형성에 대한 관심이 필요하다. 셋째, 가상공간은 존재기반 자체가 다양한 수준과 특성의 다중적인 면을 가지고 있기 때문에 인터넷 사회자본도 현실에서 관찰되는 사회자본과는 내용과 형식, 특성이 다를 수 있다. 넷째, 인터넷의 사회자본 효과와 관련한 학제간 연구도 필요하다.
요컨대, 인터넷 사회자본 연구는 현실의 기준과 잣대로 평가하기 보다는 인터넷의 신뢰와 협력방식에 주목하고, 이를 통한 네트워크와 호혜적 규범이 가능한 발전적인 연구 필요성이 증가하고 있다.
