    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of learning environments (traditional vs web-based) and learning types(collaborative vs individual learning) on the English composition achievement of high school students. One hundred and sixty first-graders were selected from a high school in Gwangju. All of them were female. The four classes which constituted the subjects were randomly assigned to collaborative or individual learning classes under web-based learning environments and traditional learning environments. For the study, 2 X 2 factorial design was employed. The results of this study are as follows: First, types of learning environments and those of learning made significant effects on the scores of English compositions. The classes under web-based learning environments and the collaborative learning classes showed more achievements than the other classes. Second, types of learning environments and those of learning affected significantly the logical expression of the English compositions. The classes under web-based learning environments and the collaborative learning classes scored more than the other classes. Third, types of learning made significant effects on the originality of English compositions. The collaborative learning classes showed better results than the other classes. From the results, we can conclude that web-based learning environments and collaborative learning lead to better achievements in English compositions.
