다문화 시대의 시민 = 한국사회에 대한 시론

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

These days many nation states have faced the challenge of diversity following globalization of capital and labor. They were relatively homogeneous polity in terms of race, culture, and religion. However, globalization brings immigrant workers, unfamiliar culture, and new religions into the borders of traditional nation states. This kind of development tests the capacity of native society with respect to the fair principle of social integration among minorities as well as majorities. Korea is not an exception from this sort of challenges. If so, what should be a common denominator to be a citizen in this increasingly diverse world? What should be the rights and duty of citizens and on what ground do they share common identity as citizen of a political community? This paper tackles the question of ideal type of citizen in the multicultural era, especially from the Korean context. Our society has some inclination to emphasize republicanism as an ideal citizenship model. I argue against this trend and suggest the way to strike a balance between liberal and republican citizenship models through the tripartite qualification, namely rational dialogue and mutual respect with firmly guaranteed political rights.
