Today's Korean society faces with rapid aging process and the lowest fertility rate among world nations. Rapid aging process resulted by very low fertility rate has been often indicated as a factor to delay social development. Korean government started to pay attention to these demographic phenomena and put efforts on preparing effective measures.
Despite the fact that fertility behavior is a very important women's issue, only a small number of studies have used gender-sensitive perspectives in explaining recent changes. Considering women's perspectives and values as important factors, I will try to explain recent changes in Korean demographic aspects and family relationship. First, this paper will review the demographic changes and results by low fertility rate and high aging rate in Korea. At the same time, I will focus on the differences by gender, age, and stratification. Second, focusing on changes in values and life-style, I will try to find out the main causes of dramatic fertility decrease. Third, I will review the changes in family relationship for both young people and the elderly. Finally, I will try to suggest alternative gender-sensitive policies which focuses on changes in women's attitudes toward family life.
