This paper is a preliminary report of folk house type study of central part of Korea based on mostly field work data conducted from March through August, 1974. In this study house types are considered as a major cultural element which can be used to delimit a cultural area of Korea.
House type samples are collected along the automobile roads, about 30-40 houses in each 1:50,000 scale topographic sheet, covering east-west 15' longitude, north-south 10' latitudinal distance. Findings of the study may be summarized as follows:
1. About 80% of rural villages are located in small basins or mountain valleys, and about 70% of houses are built facing towards southerly direction, south, south-east, and south-west, only about 15% of houses faced towards north, north-east, and north-west.
2. L-shaped house dominates in Kyonggi area while a straight line shape house with two-room width is common in Kangwon area. About 47% of houses of Kyonggi area are L-shaped houses, and about 51% of houses are straight line shaped in Kangwon area. Larger houses are squae U-shape houses, double L-shape with the L's fitting together, and square houses with inside courtyard, distributed mostly in Kyonggi area.
3. An attempt is made to find out relationship between house types and age of houses. However, it shows no meaningful co-relationships between the two.
4. Gates of houses are commonly located in the front side, about 66% of total houses, and 28% of houses have their main gates in the side of the houses.
5. Around the main building, soybean souse-jar stand, out-door toilet, animal shed, water well are located inside or outside of the fences. About 85% of houses have soybean souse-jar stands, 86% of houses have out-door toilets, 65% of houses have well or water pumps, 80% of houses have fences. Fences may be classified into three types, one which surrounding whole house, others are front or back side of house only.
