The purpose of the study is to review the possibilities for developing a new paradigm for women`s lifelong education as a coping mechanism for changes happened in the family relating to its types, structures, and functioning. As Korea has witnessed rapid transformation in the family structure due to the souring divorce and remarriage rates and the declining marriage and birth rates. Such changes brought about increases in the non-traditional family types such as lone parent families, blended families, elderly households, one-person households, as well as families with special needs. These newly emerging families are often experiencing problems of poverty. domestic violence, child or and elder abuse. They also report difficulties in adopting to new environments following family dissolutions and rearrangements because of the lack of adequate coping skills and knowledge.
This study attempts to integrate the needs of the vulnerable families as well as traditional families into the viable contents of lifelong education for women. Integration of women`s lifelong education with the welfare service programs could work effectively to help women and the families in transition. As lifelong education programs may function as a powerful coping mechanism for adopting to changes happened in the family, six major areas of lifelong learning programs for women are identified: programs to enhance and support family relationships; programs to fit in the different stages of family-cycles; programs to assist women to get employed and to be self-sufficient; programs to prevent, ease or solve the family problems; programs to help women and the family cope with societal changes; and programs to assist adjustment of rearranged families through divorces or remarriages.
