The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between family strength perceived by Korean elderly women and their depression. The instrument used for this research were the depression measurement(Yesavage,1983) and family strength measurement(Eo, & Yoo, 1995). For the depression measurement, the measurement which Jung, In-Gwa studyteam(1997) reconstruct in reference to Yesavage’s measurement was used. This study consisted of 350 subjects of the elderly women living in In-chon. To examine research questions, T-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, and Correlation analysis has been used. The main findings were as follows ; 1. The degree of family strength in Korean elderly women was generally high. Among four factors of family strength, the degree of family relationships was relatively higher and that of family values was relatively lower than the others. 2. The average degree of depression in Korean elderly women was 15.04/30.00, which was not in a severe state. 3. The correlation between the degree of the family strength and that of depression in elderly women revealed that the higher the family strength, the lower the depression. From these findings, it was suggested that the depression of elderly women was closely related to family strength, and family strength was the very important variable in elderly women’s depression.
