Career development is a life long process of getting ready to choose and typically continuing to make choices from among the many occupations available in our society, Each person under taking this process is influenced by a great number of factors, including family, personal values and aptitudes, and societal context.
Because of the centrality of work in most people's lives, it is important that we strive to understand the career development process and how it can be influenced to benefit individuals as well as the greater society.
The purposes of this study are to promote a fuller understanding of career development and to explore ways it can be facilitated. My primary approach to achieving these goals have been to ask leading authorities in the field to pressent the latest versions of their theories.
On of the unique aspects of this study is that it presents major theorist's most up-todate ideas side by side in similar format so that they can be directed compared.
Many of the theories discussed in this study have updated but those updates are scattered among a variety of sources. This research is designed to function as a primary and secondery references, bringing together in one place the most current ideas of recognized authorities in the field of career development.
My emphasis on career development practice theory and on current issues in the field have resulted in this paper.
The main theories I investigated was as following: trait-factor, need, developmental theories, psychoanalytic, social, decision-making, and social learning theories.
