This study focused on patterns of TV program preference among the North Korean refugees in relation to their acculturation in the South Korean society. To examine the TV program preference patterns of the North Korean refugees, the Q-methodology was used. The participants were selected from the North Korean refugees in South Korea with the help of the government. The Q-sorting was conducted on 17 refugees from the 6th to the 20th of November in 1998.
Q statements(Q-items) were generated from the various TV programs on South Korean television broadcasting. The selected 50 Q-items were classified into 13 groups: news reporting(5 items), public debates(2 items), sports (2 items), culture & art(3 items), documentary(7 items), variety show(l1 items), talk show(2 items), quiz & game(1 item), comedy(1 item), information(4 items), drama(7 items), cinema(3 items), cartoon(l item).
The findings of this research suggests that the North Korean refugees can be divided into two major types according to their program preference: "indigenous program seekers(type l)" and "outlandish program seekers". The "outlandish program seekers" could also be divided into two sub-types: "foreign cinema seekers(type2)" and "comedy & sing a song program seekers(type3)".
The indigenous program seekers type outnumbered the other sub-types. The indigenous program seeker group includes mainly old and less-educated members among the North Korean refugees. On the other hand, the outlandish program seeker group is consisted of relatively young and educated members.
This study also analysed the relationship between the patterns of TV program preference and the participants' acculturation types. While the indigenous program seekers are highly related with the separation or marginalization/deculturation type of acculturation, the outlandish program seekers are related with the assimilation or integration type of the acculturation.
However, the indigenous program seekers only expressed their discontent to the South Korean culture, there is a possibility of separation or marginalization/deculturation among them. It would be better to guide them to follow the integration process rather than that of separation or marginalization/deculturation. On the other hand, outlandish program seekers show both assimilation and integration patterns. Since the assimilation pattern can cause their confusion and social chaos, it would be better to guide them to follow the integration process rather than that of assimilation.
This study discussed the theoretical implications of the relationship between the types of the TV program preference and the types of acculturation was founded. It also suggests that further empirical studyㆍwhich examine the use of various media including newspaper and internet among the North Korean refugees in South Korea will be essential to explain the relation between their media preference and their acculturation patterns.
