The purpose of this study was to examine informal mathematics competence based on addition-subtraction abilities and strategies by age and gender in three-, four-, and five-year-old children. The subjects were 30 three-year-old children, 30 four-year-old children, 30 five-year-old children. The interview with observation used story problems on informal addition-subtraction abilities and strategies. The scores of addition-subtraction were analyzed by the General Linear Model and Duncan Post hoc Test. The frequencies of strategies were collected and analyzed using the Log Linear Model. The results are as follows : (1) There were significant differences in informal addition competence between three; four-and five-year old children but no significant differences by gender. (2) There were significant differences in informal subtraction competence among three-, four- and five-year old children by gender and the interaction effects between the ages and gender. (3) There were significant differences in the frequencies and types of informal addition strategies by ages. (4) There were significant differences in the frequencies and types of informal subtraction strategies by ages. The recommendations of this study were as follows : (1) Informal addition subtraction education shlold be applied to mathematics education in early childhood education based on counting activities. (2) Follow-up research should examine the informal mathematics competence of preschool children.
