This study tried to identify the main mechanisms producing prosocial behavior and the forming process of it. Empirical analysis using elementary school children has been conducted. Altruistic value, moral reasoning, trait empathy, guilty feeling, social approval need, self-esteem, empathic arousal, empathic concern, cost-benefit effect were chosen as working variables. The results showed that process variables and the situation where prosocial behavior happens are more influential than individual traits. Among three hypotheses on the mechanism of prosocial behavior, such as Empathy-Altruism Model, Negative State Relief Model and Cost-Reward Model, Empathy-Altruism Model has been supported by this study. Empathy has been identified again as the most influential element producing prosocial behavior.
