This study was devised to examine the stability in the emotional and behavioural problems of Korean primary school children. One hundred and seventy-five children were assessed by teachers using the Children`s Behaviour Questionnaire (CBQ) over 2 years and 8 months. In case of the stability of problems in the subjects as a whole, among the problem group (46 children) followed from Study One, 27 children persisted in having problems in Study Two. The stability was therefore 58.7%. The correlation (Pearson`s r) was .34 (p<.001) between the CBQ scores of Study One and Study Two. Considering the sex in relation to the consistency of emotional and behavioural problems, the stability for boys was 60.5% and girls 33.3%, so that boys were twice as likely as girls to persist in having problems. The correlation coefficients between the two measurements were .31 (p<.001) for boys and .09 (p>.05) for girls. The stability in nuclear families was 61.1% and in extended families 50%. That is, the children from nuclear families persisted in having problems rather more than those from extended families. The correlation coefficients between the two measurements were .42 (p<.001) in nuclear families and .04 (p>.05) in extended families. Considering the type of emotional and behavioural problems, the stability of emotional problems was 25%. Behavioural problems persisted in 61.1% of the children. This finding indicated that behavioural problems persisted much more than emotional problems. The correlation coefficient of emotional problem between Study One and Two was .16 (p<.05) and of behavioural problem .33 (p<.001).
