This study searches for the basis of the social studies in the elementary school education, examining the meaning, character, objects and methods of its pedagogy. The pedagogy of social studies in the elementary school is an applied discipline which aims to construct a theory through the application of the basic and the peripheral disciplines, to treat practical problems. It is, therefore synthetic in that it applies harmoniusly the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches along with the qualitative and quantitive appoaches. In addition, it has a normative and, at the same time, specific character to aim at suggesting models of citizen in democratic societies and at applying them in the society of Korea. The main objects of the pedagogy can be established with regard to the curricula of the social studies in the elementary school. And the other objects can be established with regard to its background disciplines or the related social life. As for the method, various methods, e.g. empirical, analytical, cultural, descriptive, historical, normative, ets., are available. The research model in this study in devised regarding its object, related disciplines and social life, and method. The pedagogy of social studies in the elementary school could be advancced when the points at issue in this study are in continuous investigation, revision and systematization.
