This study is mainly focused on analyzing the structures of space and at the process of each space obtaining its own meaning, drawing the power that is in the middle of each space. Here, the concept of `space and place` is being followed Yi-Fu Tuan`s Space and Place. The space in <A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel (영월행 일기)>can be defined as two different aspects, space in terms of a stage and as an idea space. Also, the stage space can be sectionalized as three separate places, the library of Cho dang jun`s house, the road to Youngwoel and Youngwoel itself. Each space has the meaning of; repetition and reiteration of opposition, complement and crossing of the role, and the equivalence of freedom and death, which each implies a concept as a place. The library of Cho dang jun`s house is filled with tension caused by oppositions among the characters. It can be said that the place is a space reflecting an image of reality. And in the middle of it, there is a great power that can remove the oppositions. On the way to Youngwoel, Cho dang jun and Kim si hyang supplement each others imperfections of their role as servants and affirm the love between them. However, because the great power controls over their journey, a love based on true freedom cannot be realized in the end. As for Youngwoel itself, it is the place of an absolute alienation. But the meaning of that place is enlarged when King Danjong overcomes the alienation mentally and gains freedom, which is expressed by King Danjong`s smile. And yet, although this indicates the enlargement of its meaning, he had no choice but to face death, for the absolute power would never allow both of his freedom and his expanded space. The idea place is shaped by a form of Dome and it covers the great power which is in the stage place. The form of Dome presses the stage place with the cubic power and commands a passage which light comes through into the stage place. So, it can be said that Lee expresses the process which human being`s freedom is collapsed by the great power in <A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel>. But I must admit that this theory can be referred as too ideological. Consequently, we should reconsider the partition method of Dome as a space structure, that is, if it has any meaning in the actual scene.
