일본의 도시화 과정에서 마을만들기의 전개와 주민 참여 = The Evolution of “Matzizukuri” and the Public Participation in the Urbanization of Japanese Sociery

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis reviews the history of urbanization of post-war Japan in terms of the development of residents' consciousness. It also analyzes the patterns of public Participation which have changed in the socio-economic context. The discussion is focused on the ‘Machizukuri’, a form of urban revitalization which actively has been carried out in Japan since 1980s. In Machizukuri, it is crucial part that the local government forms partnership with the private sector and local residents. The urban renewal is not simply achieved through rebuilding and investment of capital. Communicative interactions among the participant groups are the essential parts in producing the cultural meaning of the space and social vision in the area. Machizukuri, therefore, is a collective action to redefine and restructure the city based on the citizenship : an example of participant movement in local democracy, of which Korea is still in the beginning stage.
