As the old population, especially the very old, and the frail elderly grow, there are much concerns who will care for the frail elderly. It would be important for us to care for them by the family members, because we, Koreans, have family values which include filial piety, i. e., family responsibilities or support for the aged, and in addition, no social support. Both gerontologist and society encourage family caregiving system. There are not much interest, however, what patterns of caregiving would improve the quality of life among the aged. They consider the frail elderly as the dependent only, and it does not specify what services would provide, and the what research models predict the better quality of life of the elderly. The present study tried to establish the concept of various caregiving services as social support for the elderly, and predict in theory that caregiving services could influence the elderly`s life via what pathways. Based on theoretical considerations with some dimensions and effective model of social support, the concept about structure and functions of the elderly caregiving services as social support and the hypothetical pathways that influence the quality of life of the aged were drawn. The structure of the elderly caregiving was constructed by division of social integration, caregiving network of the elderly, and the function as comprehensive including positive, such as, emotional, instrumental, informative, and negative aspects of non-desirable caregiving behaviors. Also the pathways that caregiving could influence the quality of life among the aged were divided and suggested both positive and negative effects.
