The purpose of this study is to suggest the problems of housing for the elderly and to suggest its desirable direction. Specially designed housing, which typically includes a variety of supportive services, can help the aging compensate for their declining physical mobility and can specifically redress the health problems associated with advanced age. But in Korea we have not yet developed this type of housing for the elderly. What is worse, Koreans do not distinguish between nursing homes and housing for the aged in general. Therefore, it is first necessary to legally define the housing for the elderly. The second step is to authorize official support for its construction. Building a positive social environment is also important. This could include providing a subsidy for welfare of low income aged. For the purpose of constructing housing for the elderly in Korea, it will be necessary to provide loan guarantees and tax incentive programs. To form an alliance between housing and social service professionals is very important. Such an alliance would be based on several significant trends that affect the needs of the elderly and their ability to access community-based supportive services.
