This study is to investigate the factors which affect depression of the elderly persons. In this study questionnaires were used to measure solidarity between the elderly and their three generations, and depression of the elderly. Subjects were 221 persons over the aged of sixty who had one or more married children and one or more grandchildren. The data analysis making use of SPSS computer program were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, F-test, T-test, Duncan`s multiple range test, multiple regression analysis. The result of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. The solidarity between the elderly and three generations showed significant difference according to gender, age, education, pocket money, existence or non-existence of spouse, type of family, type of dependence, religion, age of grandchildren, and social activity. 2. The depression of the elderly showed significant difference according to gender, age, education, pocket money, existence or non-existence of spouse, health, type of family, age of grandchildren, occupation, and social activity. 3. To investigate the degree of depression according to the degree of solidarity between the elderly and three generations, the sub-areas of solidarity are subdivided into eight groups. The depression of the elderly showed significant difference according to solidarity of association, solidarity of similarity, helping, solidarity of interdependence, and solidarity of norm. The higher these solidarities except solidarity of norm were, the lower depression of the elderly was. But the higher solidarity of norm was, the higher depression of the elderly was. 4. the degree of effect of the variable which affect the depression in the elderly is in such order as helping their adult children(β=-.27), occupation(β=-.27), gender(β=-.17), health(β=-.16), religion(β=-.13) and R2 of such variable are 47%. From these results, we knew that living together was not important but having a lot of contact and similar thought was important. Moreover, it was the most important to keep reciprocal help between the elderly and three generations. To keep reciprocity, the elderly should be in good health and in financial independence. Therefore, it will be necessary to provide for designed one`s old age.
