The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social support and self-esteem on juvenile delinquency. This study was especially focused on investigating the interaction effect of social support(teacher and friend support) and self-esteem(academic and social self-esteem). Subjects were 288 10th and 11th graders enrolled in 2 high schools. Results showed that delinquency was correlated negatively with teacher support, and positively with friend support. However these relations were differ depending on individual`s academic and social self-esteem level. First, for the high academic and high social self-esteem students, those who perceived low teacher support showed delinquent behavior 3 times as high as those who perceived high teacher support. However for the low academic and high social self-esteem students, high teacher support group showed much higher delinquency than low teacher support group, Second, overall high friend support was related to high delinquency. But for the low academic and low social self-esteem students, those perceived high friend support showed significantly lower delinquency than those perceived low friend support. Based on these findings, this study concluded that the influence of teacher and friend support on juvenile delinquency would be either positive or negative depending on academic and social self-esteem of each individual, The findings of this study would provide preliminary basis for understanding the adolescence and their delinquent behaviors. Educational implications for adolescent guidance are discussed.
