The purpose of the study was 1) to examine the background of DBAE(Discipline-Based Art Education) and its implication on current Korean art education era and 2) to present art programs based on the DBAE approach.
The study included 1) the applicability of DBAE (presenting a DBAE program model, investing researches studied on DBAE in Korea, the relationship between DBAE and the 7th Korean National Art Education, DBAE and open education, DBAE and performance assessment methods); and 2) two art programs presented to show how DBAE approach is applied for appreciating artworks by Namjun Park, the famous Korean video artist.
Following its foundation in 1982, the Getty Education Institute for the Arts adopted the ideas of art educators who had been calling for a more holistic, comprehensive, and multifaceted approach to art education, and extended DBAE’s boundaries.
There have been lots of programs based on the DBAE approach developed since it was introduced to Korea, but most of them were focused on the developing individual program itself. Therefore, more systematically organized programs for each grade level should be developed. In addition, educational, cultural and social differences, traditions, educational circumstances at each education settings should be considered when developing art programs and curriculums.
It is regarded that DBAE is not the one to be accomplished as an aim, objective, or an educational destination, but the one of educational teaching methods in order to organize art programs and curriculums. DBAE itself is an approach to instruction and learning in art and not a specific and fixed curriculum. The most important thing art educators have in mind is that they have to consider what students most want and what they can provide. The DBAE approach is also compatible with the 7th Korean National Art curriculum, open education, and performance assessment methods.
