다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This paper studies how a word`s meaning becomes polysemous by extending the scope of its referential domains. Among several mechanisms as the causes of polysemy, this paper focuses on the study of metaphor. Since the people understand the world itself in a metaphoric way, it is reasonable to say that the language which involved human thoughts goes though the process of polysemy via metaphor. This paper studies conventional metaphor, i.e, the dead metaphor, which is different from metaphor in rhetoric. Conventional metaphor can be divided into conceptual metaphor and image-metaphor. Conceptual metaphor is further divided into structural metaphor, ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor, while image-metaphor is divided into image overlap and metaphor of synaesthesia. A specific discussion of this paper is carried out centered by the examples of the Middle Korean`s polysemous words in the fifteenth century. This study will show the ubiquity of metaphor, which goes beyond the tomes. This paper does not claim credit for providing valuable data i.e, a list of newly found polysemous words. However, it can be meaningful that a new approach has been attempted to illustrate the relation among the meanings of polysemy. This study of metaphor values not only to confine the data of Modern Korean but to furthermore explore the examples of Korean language in the fifteenth century.
