The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of an orphanage environment on child·youth development. The subjects of this study wee 71 children who have been cared for in cottage system and 101 children who have been cared for in institutional orphanages in Korea. Cronbach`s α, Frequency, T-test, Correlation, Multiple Regression for statistical analysis were conducted for data analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: (1) The cottage system and institutional orphanages environment were significantly different in speech stimulus, variety of experience, emotional mood, social maturity, community relationship, and total environment. (2) The two groups had significant differences in scholastic competence, social competence, and total competence. (3) The significant variables which had positive correlation of child·youth development were material access, emotional mood, social maturity and basic needs (4) The significant variables which had an effect on children development were emotional mood, social maturity and community relationship.
