This study developed and used a literacy portfolio model to track the literacy experience of young children at centers and homes. The model focuses on the portfolio as a cooperative tool to promote and assess parents` and teachers` involvement in children`s literacy development, and on its use as a guide for instruction and assessment of young children`s literacy development. The model was implemented for eight weeks in the centers with 24 children and 10 teachers as subjects. The portfolio was used for seven weeks in home environments with 6 mother-child pairs as subjects. The results of this study show that the literacy portfolio model is effective in enhancing cooperation between centers and homes and can be used as a teaching and assessment tool for young children`s early literacy development.
