The purpose of this study was to articulate the essential characteristics and its components of flow experience in dance through describing and analyzing, from the phenomenological perspective, dancer`s own experiential description. For doing this, the study focused its main concern into the dance performer`s own subjective experience. The `experiential description and analysis` method was used to collect and analyze 15 research participants` flow experience and to categorize their meaning from the phenomenological perspective. And each categories were compared with the content of 9 components of `flow-model` proposed by Csikszentmilhalyi The following findings were articulated as the result of this study. The nature of dance is an experiential phenomenon happened in the dimension of time and space by bodily movement. From this perspective, the essential characteristics of flow experience in dance are consisted of the following three definitional factors: 1) lived time, 2) lived space, 3) live body. Those of components would be the tool for investigating the nature and structure of dance performance. In conclusion, it was suggested that the understanding of the meaning and value of flow experience in dance would be helpful for the educational context of dance among dancer, choreographer, and dance educator in terms of methodological dimension. In addition, this study assured that the phenomenological approach would be proper methodological framework for researching the dance experience.
