The Purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of children's writing abilities and interest between the activity of whole language approach and code-emphasis language approach.
The problems of the study were as follows :
1. Are there any difference between the number of letters and sentences of journal writing according to the whole language approach and code-emphasis language approach?
2. Are there any difference in children interest on the writing according to the The whole language approach and code-emphasis language approach?
The subjects of this study are thirty young children who were 5.1 years old at a kindergarten established with an elementary school in Changheung.
The control group consists of fifteen of the subjects utilizing the code-emphasis approach and the experimental group of the fifteen using the whole language approach.
The period of the research is from the 7th of May to the 13th of July for journal writing activity of whole language approach and code-emphasis approach.
The research went through the procedure of pre-test, ten weeks of treatment, and a post-inspection to investigate the outcome of the children's writing abilities and interests.
The children's writing abilities were compared with the difference between letters and sentences which were analyzed by the children's journal writing.
The interests in writing abilities were compared with frequency of participation in writing activities, which took place during a ten week observation period in which free-selected activities of 50 minutes took place 10 times every 5 minutes.
In order to measure the writing ability and interest of the two groups, the data was processed by utilization of the T-test using SPSS/PC+ program.
The findings were as follows :
1. The numbers of letters in the whole language approach is increased more then the code-emphasis approach(p<.01).
2. The usage of sentences in the whole language approach is increased more then the code-emphasis approach(p<0.05).
3. For the writing interest, analysis shows that the whole language approach is more interested in the writing activity frequency(p<0.05).
