조선시대 행정구역 복원과 베이스맵 작성 = The Reconstruction of the administrative districts and making out basemaps of Chosun Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조선처럼 한 나라가 5백년 이상 장기간 지속된 사례는 세계사에서도 찾아보기 어렵다. 그만큼 조선의 국가운영 시스템은 정치하고 견고한 면이 있었다. 이를 반영하는 사례로서 조선은 개국 당시 속현을 포함하여 520읍으로 편성된 지방행정구역을 15세기 초에 330음으로 통함시킴으로써 지방통치의 효율성을 강화시켰고, 이 체제는 20세기 초에 다시 220읍으로 대폭 줄어들 때까지 큰 변화 없이 유지되었다. 이 연구의 내용은 5백여 년간 지속된 이 330읍에 대한 행정구역을 복원하여 전자지도로 재구성하는 것으로 요약된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This project is to compile the Electronic Cultural Atlas of the Chosun dynasty. As the first fruit of our continuing efforts, we present here administrative atlas of the Chosun period. This is the first time that the complete Chosun administrative atlas has been reconstructed. It includes all 330 prefectures and districts and covers the area of more than 220,000㎢
Whereas a group of researchers has paid attention to the significance of administrative districts of Chosun Korea and actually produced some interpretative works based on the reconstructed county maps, few attempts have been made to construct the boundaries of an entire nation. It is very frustrating because we know that the work can stimulate and enhance the cultural understanding of the spaces and everyday life of an important era in Korean history.
From a functionalist point of view, a better understanding of societies is possible by looking at the distribution, density, location, and hierarchical arrangement of cultural features. Also rewarding will be the arrangement of raw data into a database, which is certain to enrich the contents of historical atlas and assist retrieving a variety of regional information with speed and precision. The Electronic Cultural Atlas of Chosun Korea thus created will lead to a more comprehensive and dynamic understanding of the material and spiritual cultures and contribute to the establishment of general theories concerning the cultural history of this period. We believe the atlas will be a cultural code for the revitalization of humanities and the expansion of research frontiers in other sister disciplines.
