`The knowledge and information society`, which is just around us, would be a typical word that characterizes the 21st century`s world. As a result of the revolutionary development of information and communication technology, knowledge and information, which are flooding all around the world, become a very powerful means to create high value-added products and services if they would be modified creatively. In this sense, every part of the whole social systems is now being demanded to change their structures and ways of existence. If this trend would be a irreversible stream of this era, we should make continuous efforts to figure out the exact meaning of the change and to examine the possible ways to meet it appropriately throughout: the society. School education is not an exception in these efforts. In view of this, the researcher attempted ⅰ) to review the characteristics of knowledge and information society with emphasis on the internet technology and its effects on societal, economic, and educational aspects of human lives, ⅱ) to analyze the meanings of knowledge, a key-word of the knowledge and information society, and ⅲ) to propose the directions of school education covering its goals, curriculum, and methods. The researcher concluded that school in the knowledge and information society should remain as an education field to cultivate young people`s cognitive, affective, physical, and moral ability as it was in the industrial society. He reasoned following two points for his argument. First, the above mentioned function of school in the next couple of decades would be maintained, because to teach young people core knowledge, technology, and values would have been a permanent goal of school education since its inception in human history. Second, since the fundamental knowledge would have wide applicability, school should teach young people this more thoroughly even though in the period of knowledge and information flood. The researcher also proposed that school should be a firm base for the preparation of individual`s life-long learning.
