Many people, including professionals in the field of guidance and counseling, tend to think that child guidance and counseling is an extension of young child guidance and counseling or a part of youth guidance and counseling. However, the function and effect of child guidance and counseling can be accomplished fully when it puts focus on children and is differentiated from the guidance and counseling of young children and youths. Children have different developmental characteristics and developmental tasks from those of youths and young children. In order to help children, therefore, the professionals in child guidance and counseling must put focus on children`s unique characteristics and their effective accomplishment of developmental tasks. The purpose of this study was to show what the professional guidance and counseling for children should be. The content of the study was as follows: 1. the developmental characteristics and the developmental tasks of children that the elementary school teachers should know, 2. the child-centered attitude that the child guidance and counseling teachers should develop, 3. the theories and practice of counseling, psychotherapy, and group counseling for both normal children and maladapted children, 4. various techniques including play, art, music, and reading necessary to perform effective guidance and counseling for children, 5. parents and family counseling which enhance effect of child guidance and counseling. The study generally discussed what the content and the practice in professional child guidance and counseling should be. It was suggested that there should be further research specialized on child guidance and counseling. Fortunately this year several books on child counseling were published.
