The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of spouse support, coping behavior and marital stress on the marital instability of the elderly couples. Each participant was administered marital stress scale, spouse support scale, coping behavior scale, marital instability scale. 120 elderly couples(240subjects) used in the final analysis were over 60 years. The elderly couples who have spouse at least over 60 years old and live in Seoul were recurited. The test analysis can be summarized as follows : First, the elderly couples experienced stress, spouse support, coping behavior, marital instability and they showed significant difference. Wife perceived stress higher than husband. And husband perceived spouse support higher than wife. Husband used more positive coping behavior than wife. And marital instability was higher in wife`s side. Second, the perception of marital stress, positive coping behavior and spouse support influence on marital instability of husbands and wives. That is, the higher husbands perceived marital stress and the less they used positive coping behavior, the higher they perceived marital instability. And the higher wives perceived marital stress and the less they perceived spouse support the higher they perceived marital instability. This study is focused on the importance of marital interaction to clarify the relation of marital stress and marital instability of elderly couples. This study propose the means of marital interaction to keep the marital life good and healthful. Also, this study is helpful to the counselling and therapy for the couples who are in crisis of marital life.
