Lotse, the old master was a sponsor of anti-educational thinking. His sole surviving work is the Taoteching or The Book of the Way and Virtue. In this study Laotse's Taoteching was analyzed in order to find out his counseling theoretic posisions. He presented three human nihilities as counseling purposes in his work. This nihilities were paradoxically speaking to present some positive moral codes. As the result, he put counseling purpose to liberal thinking processes.
Latse's work presented the Tao, making the state of nihility and vacancy valuable, was the key to wisdom. The good life is a simple rustic life of contemplation. He tried to abandon all artificial moral positions, and also to set up new natural ethical principles. It seems that he sought some anarchic counseling contents.
Laotse's two methods of counseling theraputics, confined to the relationship between counselee and counselor, were self-wakening and non-verbal communicating. They are humanistic or existential concepts. They can be analyzed as liberal or anarchic idealogies.
In this study the following conclusions were made in accordance with the finding s above and the Aristotelian four causes.
The material cause in the counseling activity is counselee. The aim of counselee is to get to know how to live. The purpose of counselor is to help him in that respect. Laotse limitted counselees to those who wanted to be political and moral leaders. However all human beings should be subjects to counselees in order to know something to live.
The efficient cause is a conceptual or mental processes in helping counselee to get to know to live. The best counseling method was a self-discovering by Laotse. We can use his self-awakening methods in counseling procedures.
The formal cause in the counseling processes is the possibility of the truth and falsity. Laotse's key to wisdom was found in the imitation of the way of nature. Such a wisdom can be used in order to help those who are living in a complex and dehumanized society.
The final cause of the counseling activity must be the same purposes for counslees and counselors. Laotse maintains that the counselee must want to learn some kinds of knowledges, which are holistic and universal. Todays counselors also should try to help counselees in order to solve their problems not atomatically but holistically.
