(Ⅰ) The study of Practical Science (silhak) reached the height of its prosperity in the later pariod of the era of King YONG JO, and CHONG JO of the Yi Dynasty.
``Silhak'' did not bring its full development, but it swayed the general branch of other learning in that time Korea.
How did exert great influence upon the Korean Language? Let's study YI JAE, HWANG YOON SOK, Centering on him.
(Ⅱ) HWANG YOON SOK (1729-1791) was born at HUNG-DOK, CHOLLA-DO (now SONGNAE-MYON, KOCHANG-KUN, CHOLLA PUK-TO0. He established the foundation of his learning by the family inheritaze(so-called ``From grandfather, father to him''), associating with other outstanding scholar of the same 랴�� exchanging the niews with each other, and extensive and greedy reading books imported from China-then ``Sino'' Dynasty, thus developing his learning great and wide.
(Ⅲ) ``Silhak'' was studied by the group of ``NAM-IN'' (member of Southern Faction) who lost power and influence in the political field of later period of the Yi Dynasty. Sine ``Silhak'' dominated the then learning circle, not a few who studied on Silhak appeared even from the different sect of faction-NO-RON (Eleders Faction) and SO-RON (Junior Faction) Though HWANG YOON SOK belonged to the NO-RON faction, his temperament of love of learning made him dip into works of great authors of the different faction and associate with the member of otter faction.
(Ⅳ) It is said that ``HO-NAM''(South down to Seoul) area was the center of ``Silhak''. BAN-KE-a great scholar of Silhak-sowed the seed of Silhak in HONAM area where HWANG YOON SOK was born. and another great scholar CHUNG TA-SAN who synthetized Silhak also achieved his learning in HONAM district. SHIN KYOUNG-JUN, a contemporary scholar to HWANG YOON-SOK came of HONAN area and HONG DAE-YONG also made his great warks in HONAM.
(Ⅴ) HWANG YOON-SOK was a genius and a scholar of great ability. his warks are quite abundant and large. Among them which published are 13 books, 26 volumes of ``YI JAE YU GO'' 7 books, 14 volumes of ``YI JAE SOK KO''. 10 books, 23 volumes of ``LEE SOO SIN PYON''. but many of then which were not published are mainly ``RAN KO BON'' (SOO PIL IL KI) ``JA JI-ROK'', etc. And they are still handed down.
(Ⅵ) HWANG YOON-SOK began his study of Korean hanguage with phonology (phonetics), just like other Korean linguists, but his ``HWA UM BANG UN JA EI HAE''(華音方言字義解) is agreat work of etymological field and ``JA MO BYON'' (字母辯) is another great achievement of syntaxd field.
