The purpose of this research is to analyze the studies on students' evaluation of university teaching in order to facilitate implementing the system of students' evaluation. The contents of the analysis are (1) the historical background of the students' evaluation of university teaching, (2) the validity, the reliability, and the utility of the students' evaluation, (3) the variables affecting the student' evaluation, and (4) the rating factors of the student' evaluation.
The results of the anlysis are as follows :
(1) Despite faculty doubts about the ability of students to appreciate good teaching, the research evidence indicates that students are generally good judges.
(2) Feedback from student ratings have made a modest but significant contribution to the improvement of college leaching. The student rating research has contributed to the broader field of research on college teaching.
(3) There are general attributes of effective teaching, such as clarity of explanation, enthusiasm, but also there are a variety of ways in which teachers can be effective.
(4) Potentially contaminating variables, such as class size. required versus elective classes, or student characteristics, make a difference, but not a large enough difference to cause researchers to misclassify a good teacher as 'poor'.
(5) There are two kinds of studies to clarify the effect of students' evaluation. First, there would be presage-process studies, in which feedback on student evaluation would be used as independent variables and teaching processes would be the dependent variables. Second, there would be process-product studies in which the processes shown to be changed by feedback on student evaluation would be used as independent variables, and student achievement would be dependent variables.
From the result of the anlysis, the following can be suggested for implementing the system of students' evaluation of university teaching in Korea.
(1) It is necessary to make the students and faculty understand the real significance of the system of students' evaluation, as the students' evaluation is found to be validated and reliable for teaching effectiveness.
(2) Systematic studies on students' evaluation should be followed before the system is implemented in Korea. The studies should include the process-product studies in order to improve the quality of instruction.
(3) In the system of student's evaluation in Korea, such peculiar situation as the authority of faculties, educational system and environment should be taken into consideration.
(4) The committee of students' evaluation should be established for measuring, interpreting and counselling the results of students' evaluation.
