The aim of this study is to make clear John Dewey attempted to do in the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago(1896-1904) by examing the curriculum of the school. Dewey's idea about teaching and learning has greatly affected modern curriculum thought.
Strictly speaking, the core point of Dewey's educational theory is that true learning can be made through learner's experience. What Dewey attempted to experiment in the school was fundamental problems of all the process of education. The features of the curriculum of Dewey's Laboratory School are as follows.
1. Selecting, organizing, and teaching of the subject-matters according to the development of child, and executing and modifying of the collective educational program which is composed of such subject-matters.
2. A test of the effect of models of teacher such as the apprenticeship model and the scholarship model.
3. A test of efficiency of the complete integrated experiencial curriculum which is called the occupation.
4. Verification of the appropriateness of his new concept of education, which insists that education is the reconstruction of experience by means of interest and self-activity and thst growth is the only educational aim.
5. A search for a new model of school which will compromise and unify the conficts between achool and society, child and curriculum, and theory and practice.
