One of major benefits of regular exercise is its effect on important psychological process. This paper has shown the relationships between exercise and mental health and affective processes. Exercise is associate with lowering anxiety, helping depression, and reducing stress and tension. Exercise can also favorably affect moods, cognition(iinformation processing), and self-concept(self-esteem). Although a causative link between exercise and improved mental health has yet to be established, psychological and psychological theories have been offered to explain the link.
A number of psychological theories and phpotheses introduced to explain how exercise might provoke psychological change. These underlying mechanisms discussed independently ; a) Pitts-McClure Hypothesis, b) Endocrionlogical Hypothesis, C) Thermogenic Hypothesis, d) Cerebral Lateralization Hypothesis, 3)Stress Generalization Hypothesis, f) Opponent-Process theory, g)Inverted-U Hypothesis, h)Viscera Afferent Feedback Hypothesis. Most of these hypotheses fall in the reductionist category, and it is possible that the hypothesized mechanisms operate in an interactive or synergistic fashion. Furthermore, these proposed mechanisms are entertained within a hypothetical context, and need to be systematically tested in order to explicate the reason for the altered mood as well as the condition under which mood elevation can be maximized.
